This journal, which later became known as the Athenian Mercury, was published by John Dunton’s Athenian Society. Known for answering questions on a wide variety of topics, it marks an important point in the history of the English periodical press.
Proposed Conservation Treatment:
(Volume 1): Repair and reattach loose leaves. Make a new leather spine using brown calf. Rebuild corners, cover with Japanese paper toned to match leather. Retouch leather. Attach repaired cover to text block using linen hinges. Cloth covered clamshell box.
(Volume 2): Remove cloth inner hinges. Remove damaged leaves, and flyleaves. Wash, deacidify, mend as needed then reinsert into book. Use Japanese paper hinges instead of the old cloth hinges, so the book will open more easily. Cloth covered clamshell box.
